Mercane Wide Wheel Electric Scooter Review 2023: Best Mid Range Scooter?
Pros
Cons
Built with ultra-wide wheels with front and rear suspensions and two powerful motors at 500W each, the Mercane Widewheel electric scooter can go up hills with ease. It is the scooter you have been waiting for to conquer those looming hills around your neighborhood.
Does it really live up to its reputation and how it is marketed? This Mercane scooter review will look into its features and downsides to deliver the real score to you.
Speed and Power output
This wide wheel scooter is available in single and dual motors that dictate the top speed – 20mph and 25mph, respectively. This is thanks to the motor’s base output of 500W that peaks at 800W.
While the top speed for the single motor is clocked at 20 mph, it can be reduced to 15 mph, depending on the road conditions and the weight of the rider. Realistic tests done on the dual-motor unit showed a range from 20 mph to 31 mph.
Since you are only allowed to drive up to 15 mph on any public roads and streets in the US (1), the Mercane Wide Wheel electric scooter more than does the trick.
Of course, when your goal is to ride up hills or inclines, a dual-motor model is a perfect choice.
Range and Battery Performance
The Mercane Widewheel electric scooter uses a Lithium-ion battery at 48V 8.8Ah and 48V 13.2Ah for single-motor and dual-motor models, respectively. This delivers a 20 to 25-mile range, depending on the number of motors the electric scooter has.
A single charge will last up to 25 miles, and you only need to recharge it for 4 to 6 hours. Equipped with a battery status display, you will know if your wide tire electric scooter needs recharging. The same display also tells you the overall health of the battery. The charger LED, on the other hand, turns red when charging and green when the battery is full.
Design & Construction Quality
This scooter is also called the “Batman scooter” due to its sleek design and durable construction. It not only looks good but works just as well. This is thanks to the cutting edge die casting method that the manufacturer employed, resulting in a seamless appearance. Something you cannot say if it was welded together.
The wide wheel scooter also doubles as a kick scooter for when you run out of battery, offering a level of flexibility. Then, there is the super-wide deck that makes balancing a breeze.
Materials:
It is made of lightweight aluminum alloy, which is the same material used with the Xiaomi Electric Scooter M365 and the Segway Electric KickScooter ES1. This contributes to sturdy build quality and an overall modern look. The scooter is also easy to maintain and ensures riding comfort. It also has a stylized grip-tape and bright red caliper.
Despite the choice of lightweight material, the scooter still has a rider weight limit of 220 lbs.
Handlebar:
The placement of the acceleration and braking mechanism on the handlebar feels natural and ergonomic. Apart from the throttle and brake levers, it is also fitted with a front LED light, power button, and brake LED. The 2019 model even comes with an ignition lock key placed just below the battery status display.
The Mercane wide wheel electric scooter comes with different settings mode – Eco Mode and Power Mode, and cruise control that you can activate with a press and hold of the power button. This would have been easier with an interface, but the features still make the scooter better than many others.
An added bonus is that the handlebars can be folded inward too.
Foldable:
This wide wheel electric scooter can be folded to a size of 550mm x 220mm. Fold the handlebars inward and it will be much easier to carry around and store. This does not mean light since the scooter weighs from 42 to 50 pounds, depending on the model.
It is not exactly portable, but it’s heavy feel and solid look are preferred by many.
Seat:
The seat for the Mercane Widewheel electric scooter is sold separately. If you want to enjoy the flexibility of riding it standing up or sitting down, purchase a seat. There is a designated mount hole on the deck where you can attach it.
Assembly:
The wide wheel electric scooter comes fully assembled, but you will have to attach the front link connector for dual-motor models. It is just a matter of following the arrow direction and inserting the connector accordingly.
Tires & Braking System
The extra-wide airless tires measure 8″ x 3.9″ and offer a smoother ride, even in off-road terrain (specifically, light rail riding) and up an incline. You don’t have to worry about flat tires either.
The tradeoff, however, is the chunky feel. Then again, with suspensions at the front and rear, you will be more than willing to ignore the bulky look of the tires. You can ride across potholes, bumpy terrains, and cracked sidewalks without an issue.
Another downside of wide tires is the reduced turning radius. Making sharp turns is more challenging and you need to slow down when you take a corner.
This wide tire electric scooter features a rear disc brake that is so responsive it takes a bit of getting used to in controlling it. It is highly recommended not to suddenly pull the brake lever when riding on top speed to avoid being jolted off the scooter.
Safety
This scooter from Mercane comes with front and rear LED headlights for night rides. Activating them is a two-step process using the power button. Press once to turn on the electric scooter, then press again to turn on the headlights. Do the same to turn them off.
The battery status display, on the other hand, tells you if your scooter is about to die on you. You then have the option to use the “kick and go” function. To prevent overcharging the battery, the charger LED turns from red to green.
The 2019 model of the wide wheel scooter also comes with an ignition lock to prevent theft.
Brand & Customer Service
Mercane is a China-based company, specializing in the R&D and manufacturing of personal mobility vehicles. They not only develop better technology but also focuses on “human sensibility ergonomics.”
The company was established in 2015 and started the E-wagon project in August that same year. Mercane patented the “foldable kickboard” in July 2016.
Mercane has offices in Korea and the United States, particularly in L.A. To get in touch with them in California, use the online contact form. Clients in Korea can visit their office at Geumcheon-gu, Seoul for consultation from 10 AM to 7 PM, Monday to Friday.
As for product warranty, it depends on the retailer. Some of them offer a 90-day warranty. Fluid Freeride, for example, has a 90-day limited warranty for manufacturer’s defects. Because the retailer carries parts in the US, repair, and replacement can be done quickly. Amazon, on the other hand, recommends customers to contact the manufacturer directly for information on warranty and what is covered.
Downsides
The Mercane Widewheel is a bit on the heavy side, with the dual-motor version weighing up to 50 lbs or around 23 kilograms. It also lacks a speedometer and a more user-friendly LED interface.
Changing the settings from eco-mode to cruise control takes some getting used to. You need to memorize the number of times you need to press the power button to change modes. Once you get the hang of it, however, you can switch from one setting to another without thinking too much about it.
Many users say that the screws in the scooter’s folding mechanism tend to come loose. It is probably because they twist it too hard. Most video reviews stressed to handle the mechanism with care.
The suspension is also a little stiff at the beginning. Once the “kink” is worked out, the electric scooter should glide smoothly.
Who Should Buy the Mercane Widewheel Electric Scooter?
Considered an all-round scooter, it is suitable for anyone who wants a fun commute over distances of 25 miles per hour. While it is not portable in every sense of the word, it is light enough to be carried up the stairs.
With the ability to be ridden up steep hills, this wide wheel scooter is also a perfect product for anyone traveling up an incline on their way to work or school.
When it comes to the price, this electric scooter is within the upper range. It costs twice as much as the Xiaomi Mi PRO M365 electric scooter and six times more expensive than the Razor E200 Electric Scooter.
The price tag, however, just one factor to consider. If you focus more on the features, you’ll find that certain aspects of the Mercane electric scooter are worth investing in.
Final Verdict
Taking into consideration all the features of this wide tire electric scooter from Mercane, I give it a score of 4.67. If not for a few downsides, it would have been the perfect scooter of its kind.
Even the 2019 version has some issues but so much better than the previous models, which have reported problems. But with Mercane constantly working on innovation, it will not be long before they will create the best electric scooter possible.
